This map visualizes chronic absenteeism rates across U.S. schools during the 2022-23 academic year. The data are categorized into 3 levels: Significant (10-19.9%), High (20-29.9%), and Extreme (30% or higher).
Most states fall within the High category. Only 4 states – Idaho, Virginia, Connecticut, and New Jersey – are categorized in Significant levels.
Nineteen regions show Extreme levels of chronic absenteeism: Alaska, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, Arizona, Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, New Mexico, Michigan, New York, Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland, Rhode Island, Florida, Hawaii, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico.
