National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) Adapts Mobile Examination Centers for COVID-19 Testing

April 28, 2020

NCHS has teamed with the District of Columbia to repurpose a few mobile examination centers (MECs) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) fleet to help alleviate the COVID-19 pandemic.

The study has a fleet of trailers, equipped with extensive medical examination capabilities, that can help with COVID-19 testing activities in underserved populations and in areas where additional support may be needed.

NHANES, which is conducted by Westat, assesses the health and nutritional status of adults and children in the U.S. Under normal circumstances, MECs travel from site to site throughout the country with staff interviewing respondents and conducting physical examinations. NCHS wants to harness this vast NHANES experience and the vehicles in their fleet to help during this unprecedented time.

The NHANES mission is to collect data to expand the health knowledge for the nation. This latest initiative is a new chapter of that mission.
