Does Gamifying Math Lead to Better Algebraic Understanding?

April 26, 2023

Student math performance dropped substantially in the U.S. during COVID-19. But even before COVID-19 many middle and high school students struggled to understand basic algebraic concepts. To improve math understanding among middle school students, researchers have designed educational game-based technology tools to support learning, including From Here to There (FH2T) and DragonBox 12+ (DragonBox).

According to new research published in AERA Open, “The Impacts of Three Educational Technologies on Algebraic Understanding in the Context of COVID-19”, students who were randomly assigned to either FH2T or DragonBox demonstrated significantly higher post-test scores than students who were assigned to an active control group. The paper was led by Westat’s Lauren Decker-Woodrow, PhD.

“The findings support use of such game-based technologies for addressing learning loss due to the pandemic and providing students with opportunities to engage in algebraic concepts in fun and meaningful ways” says Decker-Woodrow, the lead author of the study.
